, After a- brief interval of compnrative quiet the Verdun battle has been resumed in something like its former furious intensity. By violent assaults the Germans havo gained a footing in the village of Douauinont, west of the fort of th «t name. The Allies have attacked at various other points along the front. The British, by mining, have made some headway into the Hohen w>llern redoubt, which was captured, but afterwards partly lost, in the Septemhor offensive. The French have captured trenches in Lorraine and in Alsace. The • Russians have repulsed German attacks on the southern front in their main theatre, and have made further progress in Armenia. There are various reports regarding the Balkans, Rumanian troops are said to be massing on the Bulgarian frontier, and another message de\clares that Turkey is preparing the ground for peace overtures. King Ferdinand is reported to be feign ing illness at Coburg, fearing that he, will be assassinated if he returns to his own country; The IJnitcd States Senate defeated; by 68 votes to 14, a resolution warning Americans off. the armed ships o t European belligerents. This is hailed' as a big victory for President Wilson.
