SINKING OF THE MALOJA
CAPTAIN IRVING'S STATEMENT. Ey Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Rec. March 3, 9.45 p.m.) London, March 2. 'At the inquest 011 the victims of the Maloja, Captain Irving said that considering, tho speed at which tho vessel was going astern, it was marvellous that so many were saved. If he had been able to stop the ship he would probably have saved all except the victims of the explosion. Captain Irving further stated that the explosion blew up the poop. He saw the debris hurled into tho air. There was never a shriek or sound from the women, children, and lascars. A groat number of natives must have been killed by tho explosion. Ho thought himself that a torpedo struck the vessel, but experts said the damage was such as would have been caused by a German mine carrying five hundred pounds of high explosives.
