A great 6tir of activity is reported on the "Western front, hut it remains an open question whether tho Germans contemplate another effort to drive, home their assault at Verdun or intend to strike elsewhere. The opinion obtains in Paris that the lull in tliei Verdun battle is temporary, hut violent artillery bombardment'is reported in Flanders as well as -north of Verdun. South-east of Ypres' the ' British have won an important local recovering the trendies which were captured by the Germans in tho micjdle of last month, and mastering also portion of the position from which the Germans launched their attack. North of Verdun tlie Germans have suffered heavy loss in abortive efforts to relieve the Brandenburg corps trapped in Fort Douaumont. The Germans arc said to ho effecting a great concentration of aircraft;in the Eastern theatre, as if in preparation-for an ~'offensive. Some local fighting is reported in that area.
