Sir James Carroll is to be invited to deliver the usual St. Patrick's Day oration this year at Newtown Parle in connection with the annual St. Patrick's Day celebrations. Major Marshall M'Donald, of Dunedill, lias been promoted to the rank of „ lieutenant-colonel, and appointed to the physical meteorological centre for 'the ' Fourth Army in the Mons district.' France. "Wilson was the recipient of a handsome gift, in the shape of a gold watch, from the Wellington College Old Boys, ,on the occasion of his transfer to llotorua as chief of the Government Tourist Office. Mr. Wilson has bceii one of the mainstays of the Wellington College Old Boys', and affiliated clubs, for over twclva years. H. A. Cooper, of the Royal Flying Corps. Lieut. Cooper is the youngest son of Mr. Justice Cooper. Mr. J. E. Schwartz, formerly Inspector of Public Works in Canterbury, is ddad. Deceased, who was born at Copenhagen, in 1837, arrived in Oamara in 1867. Later, in 'Dunedin, he was employed as an architect and builder. Iu 1872 he went to Christchtirch, two veins later entered the Provincial Engineer's office, and remained'there until, the abolition of tho Provincial Governments, when he was transferred, to the Public Woirks Department of the General Government. Some years ago Air Schwartz retired on superannuation. In 1876, Mr. Schwartz originated tho 1.0.0. F., A.C., in Christclnirch, Hud was the compiler of "The History of the 1.0.0. F., A.C." Mr. Schwartz was a staunch supporter of the Anglican Church. Before leaving Denmark. Mr., Schwartz was attached to the Royal Engineers, and supervised the ? rectl "" ol' railways, barracks, etc., duringi the war of 1861. An older brother, Professor Carl Schwartz, entered the Danish ltoval Navy, and took part in tjie war ol' 1848-49 against I'russia, and on the declaration of peace was director of the Royal Colleso at Copenhagen. A younger brother, Upt. Harold Schwartz, held a commission in the Danish Army, and took part in tht wai against Prussia, and Austria m IS6I. Mr. A. E. Schwartz, of I ending,is a son of the deceased gentleman.
