VOGELTOWN AND MORNINGTON

' -f> ——~ • MEETING OF RATEPAYERS., A general meeting of the Vogeltown and Mornington Municipal . Electors' Association was held in the Brooklyn School'last night, when there was a fair attendance. ' The chair was taken by Mr. C. Bethel, who asked that the meeting might show a little leniency as _ there had been considerable difficulty in ±/he matter of a secretary. They had had four secretaries during the-past year, and tlie last oiie had retired a month ago. The present secretary (Mr. Hunt) was therefore in a very awkward position, with so little time at his disposal to collect details. The chairman added that the balance to' the credit;of ;tlie association was £3 7s. 7d. The association required building up and it was the duty of everyone in the district to do n .what, they could in that direction. The secretary intimated that he could not submit a proper balancesheet showing expenditure because when he took office, no receipts for outlays came into his possession. Mr. C. W. Preston asked if there were no rules .which governed the conduct of the association. Mr. J. Staples explained that the rules which' they had, had been mislaid by the secretary twelve months ago and they had not since been heard of. Mr. 0. AV. Preston said that what they wanted was a real secretary, who could devote' a lot of time to the affairs of the association. If tho man who was in the position at present had not fife time, ho ought to candidly say so One of the first things was that they must have rules. , Tho secretary said that ho thought he had devoted a lot of time to the association, and so far as rules were concerned it was a matter for tho committee. Mr. Preston moved, and Mr. J, Staples seconded, that a new committee be olected to consist of seven members instead of ten, a-s at present constituted. The number of. seven to include the president and vice-president. This was passed unanimously, and the following gentlemen were elected". —President, Mr. G. D. Hewitt;'vice-presi-dent, Mr. 0. Bethel; secretary, Mr. C. W. Preston; committee, Messrs. J. Staples, A. Staples, A. E. Pollock, S. Fisher, and Mrs. Donaldson. The chairman intimated that they had had a very satisfactory meeting with tho Outlying District Committee of the City Council in connection with the new road between Cleveland Street and Mills Road, and it was for the meeting to say what they were prepared to do to get this road. Mr. C. AV. Proston recalled the circumstances in connection with the deputation, which (waited upon the City Council some time ago, when tho road was absolutely promised. He thought that tho City Council ought to_ be reminded of their promise and given no chance to forget it. He moved: "That this meeting unanimously approves of the route that tho City Council proposes to make."' 1 This was seconded by Mr. S. Fisher and approved by the meeting. Councillor Frost said that.' the proposed route started at the junction of the Ohiro Road and_ Cleveland Street, but the exact direction as far as Taft Street had not yet been definitely settled, but the remainder to Mills Road had all been planned. He further statted that ho was confident that the wok would have been started ero now had it not been for tho war. The road itself would be all of an easy grade and not very difficult of construction, lie was quite certain that there was not one member of the City Council who did not admit tho necessity of the road. It was proposed,by Mr. C. AV. Preston, seconded by Mr. S. Fisher, that a general meeting be held quarterly, and this was unanimously agreed to.
