The death is announced of Sir. Thomas liastie, of Oamaru, at the age of 86. Deceased, who was born at Airdrie, Scotland, left for New Zealand when a youth as one of tho band of set-' -tiers who came by the ship Philip Laing in 18JS, one of the first ships to bring settlors to Otago. Shortly after arriving ho journeyed to the ToKomairiro district, and after a short sojourn in that locality he removed to Jloeraki in the 'fifties, where lie followed various avocations incidental to the lives of tho early settlers. After a residence of close on twenty years in Hampden, Sir. Hastia removed to Oamari in 1877, where ht> engaged in contracting work in connection, with tho waterworks which wer« then being constructed. After an adventurous career in various parts of Now Zealand, Mr. Hastie returned to Oamaru 15 years ago, wWo he resided up to the time of his death. He leaves a widow and a family of five.
