WELLINGTON DISTRICT MINUS 89 APPEAL BY RECRUITING BOARD Tlie following telegram was received last night from the Prime Minister (Mr. :,iasscy) iu his official capacity as Chairman of the Recruiting Board:—. '"'The Recruiting Board is advised by tiie Defence, authorities that the returns up to Saturday last show that the 'infantry quota for tho 14th Reinforcements, for the Wellingtonmilitary District, is 67 short for No. 5 group (headquarters, Wellington City); and 22 short lor No. 8 group (headquarters at Hawera). • ■ 1 "The Board urgently appeals to the committees organised in the group areas to use their utmost endeavours to see that the quota for tho 14tli Reinforcements goes into camp at full strength. There is an excess of men for all the other branches of the service. . "W. F. MASSEY, "Chairman." RECRUITING MEETING AT LOWER HUTT. The.first of a series of meetings under the new recruiting scheme is to bo held in the Town Hall Lower Hutt, this ' evening. The subject is 0110 of national importance, and considerable interest is being taken in the scheme. The Hon. A. L. Herdman, Captain Hardham, V.C., and Messrs. R. A. Wright, M.P., E. Hadneld, and D. Weir will speak. The Levels County Council (Timaru) has passed a motion approving of the Government's recruiting scheme, and pledging itself to -support it. The councillors formed themselves l into a recruiting committee, and took' steps to undertake a preliminary personal canvass of single eligibles.
