FRENCH AUXILIARY CRUISER TORPEDOED
IN THE MEDITERRANEAN ELEVEN HUNDRED FRENCH SOLDIERS MISSING By TelegrapTT—Press Association—Copyright Paris, February 28. Official.—The auxiliary cruiser Provence, 13,730 tons, was sunk on February 26 iii the Mediterranean. There were 1800 men 011 board. Six' hundred and ninety-six were landed, and 1100 are missing. French and British trawlers and destroyers have taken 296 of the survivors to Malta. Four hundred were landed at Molos.' Apparently tho periscope of the submarine was not seen before'or after the disaster, and 110 track of the torpedo was observed. The gun crew remainod at their posts 1111 til the last moment. There are half a score of boats still at the scene of the wreck. The 6earch for survives continues. ( VESSEL "ENGAGED IN TRANSPORTING TROOPS. \ London, February. 29, 5.35 p.m. Tho High Commissioner reports: "The French auxiliary ship Provence, which was transporting troops to Salonika, was sunk on Saturday iu the Central Mediterranean. Eleven hundred and four lives were lost."
