FIGHTING NEAR VERDUN CONTINUES

FRENCH POSITION SETTER

GRAPHIC ACCOUNTS OF THE GREAT BATTLE

AUXILIARY CRUISER 'SUNK . .

TORPEDOED IN THE MEDITERRANEAN

1 \ GREAT LOSS OF LIFE

DEPRESSION;I- BULGARIA AND' ■ ' TURKEY

The French auxiliary cruiser Provence was torpedoed in the Central Mediterranean on Saturday by an enemy submarine, while engaged in transporting troops to Salonika. More than a thousand lives were lost. Speculation is open as to where the Germans will strike their next blow in the Western theatro, but the opinion seems to be universal that they have fared badly in the assault on the Verdun lines, which now betvays signs of declining vigour. The German losses in the first seven days of the Verdun battle are semiofficially .estimated at 130,000, and all reports agree that the stability of the French line is unimpaired, though some miles of territory were gained by the enemy in the course of the battle. An outburst of fighting is reported in the Baltic Provinces, .where the Russians have at some points slightly, advanced, . and elsewhere repelled powerful enemy iassaults'. A spirit of revolt against German rule and its incidental consequences is said to be rapidly gathering head both in Bulgaria 'and in Turkey. ■ •
