TOWN PLANNING.
Sir, —There lias been morp 'than enough said in tho past about town 'planning, but nothing done, and I aslc your permission to say even a little more oil the subject, in the hope that something may be done. It is false economy to drift on in the old way under the impression that wo economise 011 account of the war, and allow the forces influenced by personal profit and acquisition to stealthily and inexorably take from tho community the rights tit which it unquestionably should bo entitled. For instance, there is tho Waiwetu lliver at the Lower Hutt, a case that has particularly forced itself upon my notice, and if wo persist in our policy of doing nothing there is no doubt that very soon the land oil both sides of this beautiful river will be out up and sold, so that any rights tho public may be entitled to will bo gone forever. A strip of the land along ouch side of the river could be acquired at a reasonable price now, say two chains in width (I bolieve we have the power to t-alco it under proclamation), and a beautiful drive and park made to be tho pride of the district for all time. In continuing the present road that skirts tho Hutt Park, along the river, as far as the Wainui Road, a circular drive from the Hutt, over the concrete bridge to Petone, would be formed. The Waiwetu could be made to rival the Avon in Christchurch. I sincerely hope the authorities concerned will take this matter up. Thanking you For space, I a°rn, etc., * WAKE UP. February 29, ] 916.
