A five-roomed house, occupied by Mr. Alfred Morey, traveller for Messrs. Voitcli and Allan, was totally destroyed by fire at an early hour on Monday morning. The family had barely time to escape in their night attire, and lost thewhole of tlioir furniture and belongings, together with aboiit <EGO. in cash! Tlio origin of the fire is a mystery. The building was insured, but for what amount has not yet transpired. Tlio furniture was insured for i£GO. .

At a meeting on Saturday last, the Castlepoint County Council agreed to do its utmost to assist the Recruiting Board in its new recruiting scheme. A young-bird pigeon match was flown from Wellington on Saturday by the Masterton Homing Pigeon Club, and) was won by Messrs. Drake Bros.
The Masterton Bowling Club defeated Carterton in a shield match played on Saturday last, by fourteen points on the aggregate. Messrs. P. L. Combs and D. E. Leslie have been appointed to represent the Wairarapa Teachers' Institute at the annual conference of the New Zealand Educational Institute, to be held in Wellington in the month of May, The Hall and Walker Cup, for most points in the freezing classes at the Masterton Show, was won by Mr. W. M'Ken•/.ie.
The annual meeting of subscribers to the Masterton Technical School was held on Monday evening. The annual report, ujiich showed that satisfactory progress had been made during the year, was adopted.

Some of the women of Siam entrust their children to tho care of the ele. phant nurses, and it in said 'that the trust is never betra.yed. The babies play about the huge feet of the elephants, who are very careful never to hurt their little charges.
