THE DEYON IN FORT. • Having steamed past, her once proud predecessor, now lying battered and scared upon the crags of Pencarrow, the now F. and S. liner Devon, now on liei>-maiden voyage in Now Zealand latere, entered Wellington Harbour shortly after 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The arrival of the new,_ vessel from East Coast ports was awaited with considerable interest, representing as she docs rather a new type. Distinctive features of the new liner are hor sharp and shapely bow, and, what was chiefly interesting to the little band of people that awaited her at tho Glasgow Wharf, her true cruiser type of stern, The vessel has a really fine appearance, is fast withall, and, according to Captain Robertson (her master); is an extraordinarily fine sea boat. Constructed of steel, her dimensions are:—Length, 473 3-10 ft. between perpendiculars, and 496 ft. overall; beam, 60ft.; depth, 36.7 ft. She is a vessel of 9661 tons gross, aud 6,147.03 registered tons. 1 The electric light is fitted throughout, and tho Marconi system of wireless telegraphy is installed. She is especially adapted for the carriage of frozen produce, having 400,000 cubic feet of insulated space, which is regarded as the largest refrigerating space of any vessel that at present trades here. She has a speed of about 13 knots. In addition to the provision made for the carriage of emigrants, the vessel has been provided with four staterooms for oi<rht saloon passengers. The Devon left Liverpool on December 14, and after taking in Australian ports left Sydney for Now porte on February 12. Cargo has been lifted at Tokomaru Bey, Gisborne, and, Napier, and it-is expected that she will clear Wellington for West of England ports at the end of the week. The Cumberland, a vessel ol the same line, now also on her first voyage, to New Zealand, is built on similar lines to the Devon.
DELPHIC GOBS NORTH. The Shaw-Savill liner Delphic cleared Wellington yesterday morning for Gisborne aud Napier. It m intended that she would call at Napier first, but this ari rangement was altered. After picking up cargo at these ports she will return to Wellington. WAITOHO'S GOOD BUN. The Uniou Company's cargo-carrier Waltoino, which arrived in the stream from Vancouver on Friday evening, berthed at the Queen's Wharf No. 1/south early on Saturday morning. The vessel left the distant port on January 29, and experienced throughout 'the voyage exceptionally fine weather. Her trip occupied Mi days—an exceptionally good run. Captain Harris is in command of tho -vessel, and associated with him .are:—Chief, Mr. Mackenzie; second, Mr. A. Doles; third, Mr. F. A.. Wilson; chief engineer, Mr. J. Alexander; second, Mr. J. P. Burns; third, Mr. 11. H. Baker; fourth, Mr. W. Bailey; chiel steward, Mr. L. Anderson. The Waitomo is expected to leave for Sydney to-day with the balance of her cargo. CHARTERING BATES. One of Sydney's best-known 6hipping men lately gave a striking illustration of the marked increase in chartering rates. A few years ego the itrm he represents had a. vessel on a lengthy time "charter at £1075 per month, and ra a letter received from the captain by 'the last mail, he learns that tno vessel is under 1 engagement in the Trans-Atlantic trade at £6/00 per month. MESS-TABLE' GOSSIP. Mr. G. L. Bodley, of the Auckland office of the Union Company, arrived by the Tarawera on Friday to join , the Mararoa -as assistant purser. The Hawera will come off tho Slip today, and will depart for Patea. thiß evening. Tho Amokura. will leave shortly on her annual visit to the southern ' outlying Islands in search of castaways. The Government steamer Hinemoa, Which returned to Wellington after visiting some of the Cook Strait lighthouses on Friday, is to depart again thi6 morning to visit tho remaining lighthouses.
In a paragraph in Saturday morning's paper it was stated that the A. and A. liners Dongara and Toromoo are coming to New Zealand, via Australian ports. It now appears that' these steamers come to New Zealand direct, returning to New York, via Australia.
The I/nloor.a left Wellington shortly after 5 o'clock on Saturday evening for Melbourne direct.
With 91 passengers and 1100 tons of cargo the Victoria was due at Auckland last evening from Sydney She is listed to arrive hero next Friday, and depart for the south the same night.
. Telegraphic advice states that the barque Golden Gate loft Auckland on Saturday for Wellington.
An expected arrival in port last night was the Opouri. She brings a load of timber from Greymouth for Miramar.
