Discussing the prospects of Germany's new submarine threat, naval writers agree that Admiral von Tirpitz has possibly producod large submarines, justifying the cognomen "submersible cruisers." " Mariners report.that the newest sub- ! marines are large, and armoured on top, aud carry one to two heavy guns (apparently 6in.). They are of a thousand tons or more, and obviously capable of long journeys. Mr. Gerald Fiennes, a prominent expert, writing to the "Westminster Gazette," calls them "submarino monitors, with an armoured battery above a cylindrical hull." ! ACTIVITY AT KIEL SURPRISE ATTACK POSSIBLE ("Times" and Sydney "Sun" Services.) Londtfn, February 23. ■Numerous reports agree that there is great activity noticeable at Kiel. The possibility of a suvprise attack by. submarines, destroyers, and Zeppelins on the Grand Fleet is always consider*, able. Hritain is awaiting commencement of the sink-at-sight policy. There is great interest, ibut no fear.
