OUR ECONOMIC SYSTEM

MINISTER SAYS IT SHOULD BE REMODELLED.

By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, February 25. In the course of a speech at the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce the Hon. A. M. Myers said it was apparent that owing to the war tho whole economic sj'stem would have to be roviewed.. Tho existing machinery had been in existence siuco 1832, and it was quite time that it was remodelled. In future, trade must follow the Hag, and the Government must be behind the wiholo economic system. It devolved upon the chambers of commerce to strengthen public opinion. After the sacrifices made on the battlefield it was imperative that we should make it impossible for enemy countries to trade with the Empire. Our motto should ba "British goods for British pople, and carricd in British ships." The Minister suggested that chambers of commerce should consider the holding of a patriotic exhibition similar to that arranged in Wellington, to demonstrate the value of Empire trade. He thought tho united chambers of commerce should also make representations with a view to bringing about tho establishment of an Imperial Trade Intelligence Bureau,' thus enabling every part of tho Empire to keep in touch on questions of trade.
