Red Cross Tea at Hukanui.
A busy and very pleasant afternoon was spent at the residence of _ Mrs. A. V. Udy, of Huknmii, by tlie ladies of the Red Cross Committee. Soveral fresh memhers -were and a substantial addition to the hinds resulted from so largo a gathering. Mrs. U<ly lias again kindly offered the use of lior pleasant ami shady tennis grounds for next Wednesday's meeting, ivhen a large attendance of members is looked for. National Reserve Proposal at Masterton. Colonel Porter, C.Bj, and Mrs. Porter visited Masterton on Thursday. In the evening, Mrs. Porter addressed a number of ladies in the municipal buildings, and it iraa decided to form a women's branch of tlie National Reserve. Subsequently Colonel Porter addressed a meeting of and explained the objects of the National Reserve. He mentioned that regiilations were about to bo gazetted constituting the Reserve a. military organisation. Although there is in Masterton a Citizens' Defcnco Corps, doing similar work to that intended by tho National Reservo, the Mayor intimated his. willingness to call a- public meeting to discuss tho question of whether it is not desirable to make the Corps, which now operates in conjunction with tho Opaki Rifle Club, a portion of the National Reserve. St. Mary's Culltf. The committee of St. Mary's Guild has arranged for the opening of the Extension Children's Cottage at Karori on Thursday next, at 3 o'clock. In order to meet the pressing need for additional accommodation, six new rooms have been provided, the speedy equipment of which depends upon the help given by friends and sympathisers at the "Furnishing Tea" next Thursday, tho result of which the committee hope will enabl'o them to take in the waiting children at once.
Protection of Women. A meeting of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children was lield_ yesterday afternoon, Mrs. A. Hoby presiding. There were present: Mesdames G. Ponsonbyi J. R. Glasson, J. Kirkcaldie, S. Griffiths, and G. Winder. A number of cases whioli had been investigated were reported upon, and others were being attended to. Tlio Ladies' Auxiliary of the Association is holding a meeting at three o'clock on Monday afternoon at the Y.M.O.A. Rooms to discuss various arrangements in connection with their work. The wedding took place in All Saints' Church, Dunedin, this week of Miss Itita M'Keohnie, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hunter M'Keehnie, of Dunedin, to Dr. Douglas Martin, late house ■surgeon at the Dunedin Hospital, and only son of Mrs. Martin, of Timaru. The Rev. Dean Fitchett performed the ceremony-. The marriage took place quietly in St. Mary's Church, Karori, on Thursday of Miss Rhoda Bristow, second daughter of Mr .and Mrs. E. B. Bristow, to Mr. Peter Howden, son of Mr, and Mrs. David Howden, of Lower Hutt. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Mr. Woodward, and the bride was attended by her sister, Miss Eila Bristow. Mr. Eric Lees was the best man. The bridegroom is a member of the Reinforcements at present on leave from camg.
