TURNBULL AND JONES'S STALL
HIGH GRADE FURNITURE
VIGILANT AUTOMATIC HRE-ALAKM. A great attraction in Messrs. Turnbull and ifoncs's stall at the Town Hall is tlio interesting display of the "Vigilant Automatic Firo Alarm." "The Vigilant" are the successors to tho ■ renowned ■ MayOatway system, which owned over 80 per cent, of the fire alarms in the world, and Ultimately gavo up business in favour of the "Vigilant," in which company they havo a number of shares. Tho inventor lias had many years' experience with automatic) fire alarms, and the obvious defects of tho then known system induced him to experiment with the object of constructing a "thermostat" that would register an incipient lire or indicate when tho temperature at any given centre had risen to a, certain predetermined .point, but could not bo made to give an alarm from 'any ,other cause whatever. The thermostat is an instrument which registers tho temperature, and is an allimportant part of the system. Tho temperature operating on a metal tube in which is enclosed' a harder metal rod adjusted and fixed at one end to the tube, operates the trigger, and makes a contact in a closed metal box at ' the other end. The mere warmth of the hand in contact with the tube will set the bells ringing,' or it can bo fixed to operate an 'alarm at any temperature short of that which will melt the metal. An important point is that it is seifcompensating to a degree much gr'eatci than any. other known thermostat. A sudden rise in the temperature, such as would result from fire, would cause an alarm at a much lower point than if the temperature' rose slowly, ■ The "Vigilant' is made in portable and conipacf ' form, and may be hung up in any room, and will give immediate warning by ; ringing a loud alarm bell, and being at i ways ready for duty is particularly suit ) ed ior country houses. t At the fire station receiving signal the j recorder is fixed at the station and co«. , nectcd with each installation; It is sc I arranged that immediately the heat acts on any one of the thermostats the gong rings out an alarm in. the Morse code, indicating the position of the fire. A !j telegraphic instrument may also be set ir I motion at the same time, which will in - dicate by perforations on the tape th< r exact location of the jmtbreak^
Recently the New Zealand Government called for public tenders for the installation of an automatic fire alarm system in the new Government Buildings, Chriefrchurch. In order lo satisfy themselves which of the known system to adopt the authorities carried out exhaustive tests, with the result tha. tthe "Vigilant" was selected, and has been installed. A practical demonstration will to given ot Messrs. Turnbul) and Jones's stall, al; the Exhibition, to all those interested in the alarm.
