ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
KILLED BY; A WIRE HAWSER.
On arrival in Wellington from Porfi Chalmers yesterday, Captain M'Donald, of the Union Steam Ship Company's Aparima, reported that a fatal accident hat! occurred on the vessel white in the southern harbour. It. was not discovered, howover, until some hours
after the boat had sailed'. On Tuesday an apprentice, named E. Sutherland, 15 years of age, and stepson of Captain Waller, harbourmaster at New Plymouth, complained of feeling unwell.' He was sent below. Shortly after that' the vessel sailed, and four hours later it was discovered that Sutherland was missing. It was presumed that he had gone ashore and missed 1 his passage, but as tho result of a search he was found behind some boxes near a transom. His head was badly crushed, and he was quito dead. There wera some bloodstains on a porthole near by, and it is thought that while looking out deceased was struck by a wire hawser which waa attached to a tug. It is said that he had previously been warned to take care pi the hawser. An. inquest will .ha held. " FALL FROM A TRAIN. An employee of Mr. AY. Wiggins, named Easson, was travelling by rail into town from Johnsonville yesterday morning, when he fell off the tram as it was approaching the Thorndon'Station. Somo of the toes of his right foot were badly crushed before he could get' himself .clear of the line. He is no* in the Hospital.
