CARRIER'S STREET TELEPHONES
The By-laws Committee of the City Council reported last evening that they had received a deputation representing the Wellington Carriers' Union, asking that their street' telephone on. the Grey Street stand he exempted from the'proposal to take over such telephones as common telephones for all licensed express drivers. Another deputation from certain express proprietors also attended to urge the council not to exempt the Carriers' TJnion telephone from such proposal, _as in their opinion such telephone, is monopolised by about twenty to twentyfive carriers. The committee _ recommended that the previous decision of the council to take over all street telephones on express stands bo adhered to, ami that the City Solicitor bo instructed to prepare an amendment to the by-law providing for the payment hy tlio express drivers of an additional annual fee to cover the uso of all telephones. The committee also recommended that the Secretary of tho Post and Telegraph Department be written to advising him of the council's decision, and stating that the council will not permit any more private telephones on the streets after March 31. The recommendation was adopted. .
