GREAT BATTLE RAGING
, FRENCH FORTRESS REINFORCED , ENEMY GAINS GROUND AT HEAVY COST. RAIDER MOEWE AGAIN GERMAN PRIZE AT TENERIFFE SIX BRITISH CREWS ■ON BOARD \ i v ■ t PEACE DEBATE IN BRITISH PARLIAMENT i iThe news from the' Western front to-day tolls of a great battle whiqh is raging on an extended front along the lines north of the big French fortress of Verdun. The enemy is in great force, and is attacking with desporate energy, and at frightfu l cost. The German communique claims that eix miles of tho French front have been penetrated for a depth of ono mile and three-quarters, and that a large number of prisoners have been taken. Verdun has been reinforced by a field army under an,able commander, and the French defence, according to the official communiques from Paris, is holding tho situation. There are no fresh developments—at the time of writing—in Asia Minor. In the Balls ans, there is some promise of events in the significant audiences which have been accorded by the King of Rumania to Messieurs Filipesco and Jonescu, on the one hand, and by the King of Greece to General Sarrail, and Messieurs Skouloudisi Venizelos, and Zaimis, on the other. Tho German high sea ' raider Moewe —at least the Moewe is presumed—has' sent a British steamer into Teneriffe'with a prize crew on board, and with tho crew.s of six other steamers. Mr. Philip Snowden, M.P., has initiated a peace debate in the House- of. Commons bu.t has gained no credit, and much discomfiture, from his exploit.
