A subaltern of the Gordon Highlanders, recently bsck from the front on leave, is telling a very good story regarding the small boys of Havre. These boys have learnt that officers coming from the fighting line have generally fortified themselves before their departure with a lunohcon basket, and they therefore meet the trains and clamour for tho baskots, in which thoy often i find a tit-bit to ent. This officer says that whoa he and three other Gordon officers, who were travelling with him, arrived at Havre, their carriage was surrounded by small boys asking for the baskets. "There is nothing in them; we have en-ton it all lip; they are guite empty," explained the officers, one after the othor. "Ah, Scotchmen," was the scornful retort of one of the youngsters. • An auction fiale of purebred Lincoln lambs, the property of Mr. F. .T. Brooks, will be held at his form, Taratahi, on Mnrcli 2, by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd. Messrs. Abraham and Williams, Ltd., will hold a stock sale at Levin on Friday. "The Rod Cross Shop" in Woodward Street, will be opened for business on Fridays and Saturdays, commencing at 9 a.in. each day. Donations of goods or money, however, small, will be appreciated. Tho takings of the shop will be donated to the lied Cross Fund. 'A block of Waiknnae land of 200 acres is for sale. Full particulars can bo obtained from "Owner/' Box 1", Waikanac. Messrs. A. L.
