NEW POLICE STATION

READY IN A FORTNIGHT.

The new Te Aro Polioe Station, in Lower Taranaki Street, which is to take the place of the present brick hut in Manners Street, will be ready lor occupation in a fortnight, Ono portion of the new premises is already occupied, the stables for the horses of the mounted police having been occupied for somo little . time past. The new building, which has a neat businesslike facade, 'finished in red pressed brick, with white cement facings, has a very substantial appearance. Tho walls have been built substantially enough to take another two stories, but at present the building is only two stories high. There is a basement floor covering the entire area of the building, which ■is to bo used for general storage purposes. Tho new station has a frontage to Lower Taranaki Street of 64ft. 3£in., and a depth of 45ft. Bin. These figures only refer to the station proper. Tho section is actually 176 ft. in depth. _ Thin gives plenty of yard space, which is pretty well enclosed on three sides by buildings, two stories in height. Returning to the station, tho ground floor is conveniently laid out for (he use of the staff. There are large, well-lighted rooms for tho sectional sergeant, tho senior sergeant, the detectives, the wateh-houso, the room, and a uniform room. The upstairs provides living quarters for tho resident sergeant and a certain number of con-, stables.

On tho northern side of the yard ia a detached two-story building containing ten cells. These include threo cclls for women prisoners on the ground floor, and two padded cells. Male prisoners are to be accommodated upstairs. At the back of the yard, and extending partly up the sides is a very fine stable, with half a dozen stalls and six loose boxes. The floors are graded and channelled. Capacious loft accommodation and harness rooms are provided above.

As goon as this station is In occupation the Oity Council authorities will take possession ijf the existing station in Manners Street, which is shortly to be demolished in conformity with n plan of street widening and improvement, which the council decided upon last year;
