BUSH FIRES
TROUBLE ACROSS THE HARBOUR. On Tuesday there'were two outbreaks of fire on tho eastern side of the harbour, which threatened to do severe damage >to the bush and perhaps some of the seaside residences which ' aro dotted over the foot hills. One fire started at'about 2 p.m., between Day's Bay and Mahina Bay, destroying the manuka, broom, and gor-se that covered the hillside. Tlie flames ran up a gully, and destroyed a'clump of bush at tho top, and threatened the residences of Mr. Curtis and Mrs. Blundell. Three 'City . Council employees, engaged in AA'illiams Park, were soon on tho scene, and later. others joined in the_ fight, 'hut. it "was not until nearly midnight that tlie: outbreak wa's suppressed. It is, not known how the fire started. ■At Lowiy Bay on AVednesday tho hills above the bay took fire, and there another hard but successful fight to limit the fire area was successful. Some fine fern trees on Sir Francis Bell's estate were destroyed, and about five acres of gorse. This is the most seasonable time of the year for bush and grass fires,' and it behoves everyono to i)e on the alert toi prevent trouble and loss by fire. •
