MASTERTON NOTES
Devonshire Boarding House, containing about fifteen rooms, narrowly 'escaped destruction by fire yesterday afternoon. An upstair bedroom was discovered in flames, which spread to the adjoining room, but the Fire Brigade was quickly on tho spot and 6aved ! the building. Tho damage from water and smoke was considerable, and two rooms were gutted. The Mastorton Horticultural Society held their autumn show yesterday. There was a fine display of cut flowers and vegetables. The championship in asters was awarded to Mrs. T. B. Michell ,and' in dahlias to Mr. W. H. Dunn. No championship waß awarded in roses.
Advice has been received that Private Joe Darvill, formerly of Masterton, wlio was previously reported missis now reported to havo been killed in action in June last.
Recruiting is proceeding fairly satisfactorily in tho Wairarapa, though _ a considerable lnnnber of those enlisting are rejected as medically unfit. Mr. David Jackson, at present curator of tho public park, has been appointed from sixteen applicants as caretaker of the new municipal buildings. The Wairarapa Automobile Association has decided to draw the attention of Hie Government to tlie continued inorease in the price of motor spirits. A strong opinion is being expressed in tho AVairarapa that military trains should be run between the Featherston camp and Masterton. It is pointed out that soldiers may proceed to Wellington 011 two days a week for a return faro of Is. 6d., but if they wish to visit any of tho Wairarapa townships they nave to pay tho ordinary .fare.
