The Right Hon. \V. F. Massey is going to open the neiv show ground of the Frankton A. and P- Association oil Saturday. This district is in Mr. Massey's own electorate. .

Th o Hon. G. W. Russell went south to Ghristohurcli last night. The numerous friends of Mr. James \\. Gray will learn with regret of his death, which occurred at his residence m Brougham Street yesterday morning, alter a short illness. Deceased, who was 62 years of age, was born m New llymouth and was the fourth son of the late Mr. William Gray, sen., for many years Secretary of the General Post Office. He was educated at Nelson College, the Otago Boys' High School, and the Wellington Grammar School, at. tho last-named institution under the Rev. T. A. Bowden, the Rev. H. E. Tuckey, and Mr. W. g. Hamilton. Foiv some time ho was 011 the staff of the Colonial Bank, and after it merged into Ithe Bank of Now Zealand he entered tho Audit Department, retiring from the service some years ago. In his younger days the deceased gentleman (who was a brother of Mr. Alex. Grsy, K.C.), was a noted oarsman in Christchurch, and a first-class rifle shot. The late Mr. Gray was unmarried.

News has been received in Wellington, of _the death of Mr. Thomas Stout., M. A. I'.L., solicitor, of Glasgow, cousin of Sir llobcrt Stout, Chief Justice of New Zealand. Tho late Mr. Stout lost his son in the lighting in Flanders about two months ago.

i'.lr. A. ]£. Ballard, secretary of tho Wellington Amateur Swimming Club, returned this week from a visit to Austialia.

Councillor John Fuller has returned to Wellington from a motor tour of the Hijwke's Bay and Wanganui districts. • After having been only a week or ten days in camp, including three in hospital, Pte. F. jE. Moore, of F Company, 13th Reinforcements, died at _ Trent-ham Military Hospital on Monday morning. The cause of death is supposed to have been due to blood poisoning contracted by deceased during-his occupation as,a painter. His next-of-kin is Mr. J. F. Moore, Telegraph Hotel, Takaka, Nelson. Ilie body- will be interred at Karori to-day, being accorded full military honours.

The Government has reappointed Mr. W. H. Collingwood a- member of tho Palmerston North High School Board of Governors. Mr! Collmgwood! has been, a member of the board ever since-its inception, and ho and Mr. Barnicoat are now the only remaining members who wore members of the first Board of Governors.

Messrs. H. W. Preston and A. W. J. Cook have been declared elected members of tho lOastbourne Borough Council. There was no opposition.

' Mr. D. Moriarty, formerly secretary of tho Furniture Workers' Union, who is leaving for Auckland, was presented by the union with a gold watch and chain, and complimented on the work he had done on behalf of tho body.

11l <x- letter to his. parents; Trumpeter J. W. Morgan refers to the death of his comrade, Trumpeter-Major Georgo Munro, of the Headquarters' Staff, .New Zealand Mounted Bities. He states that the deceased died like a hero. He was attending a wounded comrade just liehind the firing-line, when a bullet struck him and paEsed through his body. This is cited as only one of many brave deeds.

Sergeant W. R. Richardson, -who was killed in action on December 5, was chief acMuntant for Dalgety and Do. at Auckland when he enlisted in tho Sixth Reinforcements for the Auckland Mounted l Rifles. He was educated at Wellington College, and after some years' service' in a banking institution, qualified as an accountant. He entered the employment of Dalgety and Co., and was afterwards transferred to the Auckland branch. Sergeant Richardson ' acted as secretary of the Auckland Woolbrokers' Association He was interested in several forms of athletics, and was a member of the Auckland Golf Club. He was also a member of the Junior Club. Sergeant Richardson was about 2S years of age. Mr. ]?. S. Pope, Secretary of the Do. partment of Agriculture, ai.d Mr. T. W. Kirk, director- of the horticulture division, have been engaged for the last fortnight upon a tour of the North of Auckland. Both the members of the Muriel Starr Dramatic Company and the Royal Comio Opera Company. will leavo for Sydney by the Manuka to-morrow. Mr. John Farrell, manager of the Opera Com-, panv, and Mrs. Farrell, will also proIceed to Sydney by the steamer mentioned. _______
