ORIENTAL BAY
IMPROVEMENTS BEING MAI®.
Early m the present financial yeaf the sum of £1200 was placed on the City Council's estimates for the contiira« alion of the work of erecting a sea wall in Oriental Bay. A start has been made with this work, commencing from Fitzgerald's Point, and working eastward in conformity with the contour of tlio bay. The wall, which is Bft. Bin. at the base, will slope inwards towards the shore, until some three or four fc-cfc from .the front, where it will slope outward and upward, the projection being calculated to prevent the seas breaking over the promenade. A little filling in will be nccessary between the new wait and the existing road, which, when, completed, will form a street a hundred' feet wide. Tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), referring to this work, said ,vcs-< terday that lie hoped to see. a similar vote on tho estimates this year, .and eacli successive year, until tho sea wall extended round to the eastern side of the bay. During the past two months the Oriental Bay beach has become a popular bathing resort, not only for children, but-adults, and on any fine day dozo.nfl may be seen disporting tliemselvfts in. the water. _ At present the bathers consist of residents and their friends and children from near and far, and it may he that tho development will call fcr the attention of the Baths and Beaches Coriimittee, as at present the children, not to be denied from their dip, nndress and.dress quite openly on the beach. A shelter of some sort, even if it is only a couple of open enclosures, will have to be provided if bathing in the bay is to be encouraged and decency preserved.
