ATTENDS A'MEETING OF CABINET SWORN IN AS A PRIVY COUNCILLOR By Telegraph—Press Association—Cojjyrtffln Ottawa, February 20. Mr. W. M. Hughes (Prime Minister of Australia) was sworn in as a Privy Councillor Ho attended a Cabinet meeting, at which Imperial affairs were discussed. The Press suggests that the precedent ought to bo followed' everywhere, the Dominions' Premiers being ex-ofiicio members of the Council. Mr. Hughes, speaking at the Canadian Club, said that preparedness and compulsory service were essential to the security of any free people with a desiro to retain their freedom. Australians, he said, valued democratic liberty, and were ready to fight to thoir last man. They could have purchased an ignoble peace with Garmany. The Germans were prepared to treat the Canadians as an independent, nation, !md to confer a like favour 011 Austiitlia. Hut Germany now knows she is fighting, not only England, but the men of resolution in the British Dominions, which will not quit while life remains.
