In consequence of the military fever which the war has generated in Runv land a firm of German publishers has just brought out a new and tenth edition of the classic - work of General von Clausewitu, "Vom Kriegc" (of war). Clausewitz, whose treatises on strategy and military science have been text-books throughout the world' for the better part 'of a century, was, with Scharnhorst, the originator of the General Staff system, though it was brought to its modern state by Moltke. A number of German generals prominent in the present campaign . "have joined in compiling a preface for tho new edition. Von Mackensen says: "General von Schlieffen, Chief of the General Stall until 1906, described this work in form and contents as tho most profound utterance ever made about war. Any further comment would be superfluous." General von woyrsch, commanding ton army in the East, says: "If-vic-tory after victory has perched on the German banners it was because our leader's have studied Glausewitz and acted according to his teachings." General von Bothmer, commanding in Galicia, says: "\yhen I went through tny library, beforo goinc to tho front, to decide what was the best

reading matter for war, I selected Goethe, Bismarck, and Clausewihs."
