Lieutenant-Colonel E. M. Maitland, of tho Royal Naval Air Service, is the hero of a parachute feat which any professional performer might envy. He recently had to consider the problem whether a. man cquld descend by parachute from a balloon 10,000 ft. above the ground. He settled the question by .performing the feat himself. He ascended in a balloon over Surrey, and when it was 10,000 ft. (nearly two miles) above ground he made the leap. He fell several hundred feet before the paraclnite opened. Then lie gradually drifted to tho ground, the journev occupying about 15 minutes. It was bitterly coli£ and his hands wore nearly numbed.
