The undue number of trades that are treated as reserved trades, slid the overgreat leniency of local tribunals to exempt single man, are threatening to destroy the success of the Derby scheme. The wholesalo postponement has reduced the yield of the early Derby groups below the War Office's smallest estimates. The tribunals are now sitting as public courts, and the reports of interesting cases are published in the newspapers. It is hoped that this will bring about a change for the better an it will discourago unnecessary appeals. Out of eight hundred appeals at Wandsworth, 650 were allowed. ' Many married men are writing to the newspapers complaining of the single men evading their responsibilities in violation of Mr. Asquith's pledge. There are fourteen thousand appeals in the city.
