Expectations are entertained by some British military experts that the Germans may shortly attempt another massed assault on the Ypres salient, in the hope of depriving the Allies of a "spring-board" for their next offensive. Official roports speak of artillery activity on botli sides on this section of the front, but indicate that the situation is otherwise for the time beiug unchanged. The Germans rc: port tho heavy defeat of attempts to regain the 600 yards of trenches recently lost. Further interesting details are given of the capture of Erzerum. It is shown that the Russian troops earned many positions at the bayonet's point. The remnants of the Turkish garrison are in disorderly flight, and are being vigorously pursued. Russian warships have bombarded Trcbizon d, a Black Sea port north of Erzerum, destroying bridges a 118 15 sailing vessels. Renewed German activity is reported in the Baltic Provinces, but further evidence is afforded that the Russians are massing in powerful strength at the opposite end of their front, in a and Bukowina. v It is officially announced that with the capture of t'ho last German position in tho Cameroons the conquest of that cdlony has been completed. The only colony in which the Germans are still offering resistance'is German East Africa. The American State Department has notified all American diplomats that merchantmen have a right to carry defensive armament.
