POULTRY INDUSTRY

A Word to Farmers.' Cm anyono c.stiiuatc the lose, of money resulting from l>ad inarkctiug of in the Dominion? It must run into tlionsands of pounds annually. Kcccntlv we witnessed the marketing of 150 dozen of C£gs sent in from farmers in the usual style- The eires .were fjatheretl from the Jiests, from under broodies, from unfinished hatches, from dirty nests. There wero eggs with chickens in them, other addled, sorno small, some big, some absolutely filthy with dirt on the shell, and others clean. They- were possibly kept on' the farm a fortnight. The storekeeper's cart called round. The promiscuous lot was bought at a price, and added to others collected from other farms at the country store. They were left, possibly, another week or two, waiting to bo packed. By the timo they reached the city market they were a month old. Here is how the country eggs sold:— , £ s. d. "30 dozen at Is. Surely we should pay the penalty for such waste. Surely farmers, their wives, and daughters oould do something to armt such extrvaganoe. The 'Government's' poultry instructors should do little else for a whole year but force homo the abovo illustration aiid cotivinoo farmers of the loss. The country eggs were declared "dear at the price," and preference was given to the fresh and shaded eggs at 50' per cent, increased cost. The country eggs are the test if marketed in approval form. Such waste a/? tve have' witnessed recently is folly, even in peace times; 'but waste in war times is a crime* and should be promptly arrested. Need For Organisation. ' In the course of conversation with a Palmerston "Standard" representative, Mr. A. E. Salisbury* Government poultry inspector, said ho. considered that the paramount need of the poultry indttstry at the present time was co-operation amongst producer. It wa6 absolutely imperative, he said, if thoy were to get a fair for - their labour, that they should organise in marketing their proI duce. and. they were up against organisation in'-both buying and selling. He 1 referred to the good work which had been done by ess circles wherever they had been given fair support. . Ho in-* stariced certain districts which he liad recently visited in which the old-time order of thing still existed —i.e., the storekeepers buying up all the eggs at their own price, and barteriner the mfor the pwilHry foods, which they also charged their own price for. In these places thousands of poultry had been sacrificed at ridiculow. prices, and the industrv was practically non-existent to-day. Oii the other hand, he gave instances of places where egg. circles existed, where the producers were obtaining Temnnerative prices for their eggs, and the industry was progressing satisfactorily. The circle movement was merely the initial step towards a sound organisation amongst poultry-keepers. • , *'
Selecting the Breeder. In selecting a male bird for next seasons breeding pen, it is imperative, if ■ egg yield is to be improved, that: lie should be tho offspring" of'a good layer. Crack /breeders appear to bo imauimpnsl.y of the opinion that prolificacy is inherited through tho male bird. Br this is. meant that in buyint? a pullet it: is more important to know that her father belonged- to a good laying strain than that her mother did. Ton cannot possibly jniprove on the laying" of, a particular hen if jou mate hor to a male of poor laying strain. N.Z. UTILITY POULTRY CLUB'S COMPETITIONS.
