WELLINGTON FARMERS' MEAT COMPANY

'A STORY OF PROGRESS.

To people who appreciate the necessity for obtaining good food, one of the most interesting displays at tho Pat riotic Exhibition will be that made by tho Wellington Farmers' Moat Company. Tho display is a fine illustration of what New Zealand can do in highclass food preserving.

The' company commeniced freezing operations in December, 1910, a little more than five years ago. Since then it has steadily improved its works in size and facilities, and its products have taken a very high place in the world's markets. Evidence of the quality of the company's products is furnished by the list of honours they gained at the Panama Exposition. Its awards at that big show were:—

Gold medal for meat extract. Gold medal for canned meats, assorted. Gold medal for refrigerated beer. Gold medal for refrigerated lamb. Silver medal for neatsfoot oil. Silver medal for wool. i Silver medal for tallow.

No wonder that the , company finds a very live sale for its moats and tongues in New Zealand and in Great Britain. In fact, it is only by working at high pressure that pace can bo kept, with the demand. It haa been found necessary to undertake the complete reconstruction of the preserving department, which is being transferred to a new building of three stories. The most up-to-date can-making and filling machinery has been secured in view of future operations. One machine is capable of turning out up to 3000 tins per hour.

Very shortly the company will.place ite meat extract on the New Zealand market. Previously, it has been consigning this article almost exclusively to Great Britain. Excellent reports of the extract have been received from the agents in London and Glasgow.'

The fine quality of the company's meats is in part due to the fact that tho works are in the centre of the very rich pastoral district of the Wairarapa. There is an ample supply of suitable stock, which have not to be driven or conveyed long distances before being slaughtered. This ensures a freshness of quality and flavour almost equal to farm-killed stock.

The exhibit which is being made in Wellington is similar to that made at the Panama Exposition. It consists largely of two-pound tins of beef, mutton, and brawn, and tins of sheep and ox tongues suitable for local requirements. On the stall .are interesting views of the company's Panama exhibit.

Besides frozen meat and frozen byI products (such as kidneys and tongues), | the company puts up tallow, wool, pelts, hides, neatsfoot oil, etc.-- It has also under consideration the establishment of a tannery. Successful experiments have already been made in the tannine of sheep skins and hides. The analyst to whom the tests were submitted reports that the results are all first-class, and the most consistent in quality of any he ha-s analysed. This, of course, is very encouraging to the company. .
