February 18, 9.10 p.m.) Gape Town, February 17. Stirring details of two British motorboats gallantly fighting a German gunboat on Lako Tanganyika on Boxing Day are related by a participator. He says: "We sighted a great blot on the horiison steaming coastwise. Off wo went after her, though she was fivefold our combined tonnage. We were so small that she did not- see us until we wore about 4000 yards off, then she turned on us, doubtless 'expecting aneasy capture. We steamed straight at her, and opened fire at 3500 yards, she replied, and shells were falling all round us, but not hitting us. Our second shot destroyed the wireless, the third hit ler wafer-line, when she turned and fled. We wero faster, and our fifth shot killed the captain and two of the crew. She then hoisted the white flag. We captured her after twenty minutes' fighting. Sho was a powerful vessel, protected by large steel shields. She was hit iu ten places, and we were not hit, though the enemy's gunners were sailors from the Konigsberg." |
