DUNEDIN MEETING

COP WON BY RORKF/S DRIFT. By Teletrraph.—(Special Correspondent.)' Dunedin, February 16. The Dunediii Jockey Club's Autumn. Meeting opened to-day iu perfect weather' with a good attendance. The course was' a little on the hard side. The totalisator handled ,£21,922, as compared with .£23,601 10s. for the corresponding day last year. All the acceptors went to the post for the Autumn Hurdles. Bore rushed to the front at the start, and was not headed again. He jumped very well, and Lord Frederick and Peerless, who tried to go with him, were outjumped. Moddito Tan n good race nnder his big weight, but eould do no better than finish a poor third. Cast Iron and King Torrent tan badly. In the Gladbrook Handicap Cincinnatus, tho favourite, was one of the last to move, and Kiltess led down the back from Hardshot and Silent "Way. Hardshot wag in command at the turn, but the good-looking Silent Way had his measure a long way from homo, and won nicely from Cincinnatus, who finished well, and will do better over a distance. Charloville was always prominent, and got third place, just dear of Hardshot and Maro Antony. The latter finished listlessly, i.nd may do better later on in tho meeting. For the Champagne Stakes Wardancer was a good favourite, but he got chopped out at the barrier, and after making up. his ground he looked all over a winner In tli6 straight, but failed on tho hill, and was beaten into third place, flood Hope carried his penalty like a racehorse, and won well. Killena was a neck in front of Wardancer.. The winner is a

full-brother to Battle Eve, bnt seems much more reliable.

The Cup went to Rorke's Drift, who scored from Ardeuvhor, after the latter had looked all over a winner. At tho 6tart Fonder and Rorke's Drift got badly away, and passing tho stand Martian Maid led from Ogier, with Hesiouo, Bee, and First Glance handy, and Fender whipping the field. Down the back the two. top-weights got stopped, and also again on the bond. At the bend Ogier aid Martian Maid were joined by Fender, nnd at the straight entrance United Service appeared on the outside, while Rorke's Drift moved up. A furlong from home Ardenvhor had charge, and his vie- i tory was loudly proclaimed, but Emerson rodo Rorke's. Drift very hard, and in a good finish he won by a neck. Fender was third three lengths away, and then came United Service, First Glanw, Snub, and Ogier, while Bee, who had been cased, finished last. Martian Maid was pulled up at the bottom of tho straight. Tliis made tho third win during tho day for horses by Calibre. Martian Maid broke a leg and had to bo shot. The first half-mile took Sljsec., and the mile lmin. 42**ec., whilo the Ml journey occupied 2min. 34 4-ssec. The Apprentices' Plato was a good thing for Spangle, who jumped out in front, and, though she had Keutlock with her for five furlongs, the Malster horse's condition gave out, and the Martian filly won easily. Fiery Cross finished third, Garetta was fourth, and St. Hilary, St. Ewe, -and Take Down were left at tho post. Spangle has not won a race previously, but as a two-year-old 6he was runner-up to Nones at Wingatui, and finished third in the 'Welcome Stakes. For the Publicans' "Handicap Fanmure was always favourite, with Robert Bell and Revel next in demaud, and they finished in this order. At tho start Charrnilla. led off from the favourite, with Karainohe and Buller at the tail of the field. Bound the bead Multoe joined Charmilla in the lead, and tho pair led into the straight from Reval, Robert Bell, and the favourite. Oliver got the latter through on the fence, and from this point he was not troubled. Ho was kept at it by Robert Bell and Reval, but ho' won. nicely by a neck. Reval was balf a length away, and then came Multoe, Twelfth Night, and Charlotte. Tn the Stewards' Welter Palisade and Ringform led Merrio Gain and Gnome, bnt the latler was soon back. The leaifers were still in command racing into the straight, where Fabrikoff became prominent. At the distance Daringdale took charge, - - and won by a head from Ringform. Merrio Gain just headed Martuk 'for third place,' and then came Fabrikoff, Snapdragon, and The Cornet. At the start of tho Berwick Handicap Sir Malt was quickest to find his feet, and ho led the whole way. Joan was prominent to the distance, where she faded. Pinnacle finished well, and got second place, well clear of Bcllshire, who-was a head in front o| a bunched field. DETAILS OF THE RACING. < By - IVlegrapli.—Press Association. AUTUMN HURDLES.
