NOTES AND COMMENTS
IBt 'jle.n'coe.t The Woodville meeting is usually a popular fixture with the sporting public, and. the Cup meetiug, which opens today, promises to he no exception to the rule. The principal event is the Woodville Cup, run over a ten-furlongs course. Tile locully-owne*! Taringaniutu is top. weight with Sst. 81b., ajid it at Mr best tho bay mare would (rive a good account of' herself, but since the Wellington meeting she has nut <l'one much worK, and may not sec the journey out. On Sum. nior Handicap form at Trentham Gold Soult, who has an allowance of 31b. from the top-weiglit, should finish in front ■of her: Marco Bello, Sst., was a groat fancy on the last two days of the Trenthain meeting, but he was then racing over n shorter'course. He may do better to-day. Maniaroa, oh the same mark, does not liko tho going too hard, ant! Expect lias yet to reproduce his earlier form. Of tho 'light-weights Rumania, who is in at tho minimum, mav bo the best. In the Hack. Hurdles Kauwairoa, lflst. 41b., has the same weight as he ran third with on tho same course in December. Tho field contains several' beginners at the game. Gladful, Sst. 51b., who fesut from Karamu, is a likely sort, but may be better after a race.
Mystified, Bst. 61b., and Fore, 7st. 13ib., raid the best of those engaged in tho Wbariti Handicap, seven furlongs. ' In the County Hack Handicap, six furjongs, Martyress, Bst. 91b., is not meeting a very strong field. Tiora, 7st. 31b., was finishing on well in tho Mere Merit Hack race at Egmont,, and may bo the best of tho tail end of tho field. Ladogiier, Multiply, and Gold Painting aro on the same mark in,the President's Handicap, tho minimum weight of which is Bst. slb. The above trio will carry 9sl. I2lb. It is a big rise for Gold Painting to. rank equal with Multiply, a winner of several cups, but the Boniform mare won In most decisive style at EllenHe. Ladogiier was also a winner at Elk-rslie and Trenthani, • and tho pair may carry the bulk' of tho money on the machine. , Marsinah, lOst 41b., is at the head of tho list in tho Victoria Hack Handicap, one mile and 170 yards. Sho may find it a difficult task to concede 171b. to Bronk Delaval, a. winner at Marton. Hyginas, Bst. 1 lib., will carry the No. I saddle cloth in the Telephone Handi- i cap, five furlongs, in which there • are several smart beginners, notably Interlude, Hyniettius, and Otter. The class iu this event is not as good as Hyginas has been racing against lately, _ and it will be no surprise to find ium first choice. . i Owners should "note that acceptances for all events at tho Wanganui meeting close on Monday next, at 9 p.m. Mr. J. "E. Madden, the woll-known breeder, has recently been judging tho thoroughbreds at .the Now York Horse Show. According to tho "New York Telegraph," lie there expressed til© opinion "that the crossing of thoroughbred sires upon hackney mares would produce not only high-priced saddle horses, but also stout and serviceable hunters, and, in fact, almost every sort of light-legged horses, including cavalry chargers." A. Oliver is to ride Bee in tho DunedinCup to-day. The Martian mare did a wonderfully good gallop at Wmgatui on Monday, and she is sure to be much fancied to-day. Oliver will also ride Panmure in the Publicans' Handicap, in which the English horse appears to be in a different class to the others. Reval, who may be second favourite, will be ridden by L. Wilson. The Hastings horseman will also have the mount on Ivillena in the Champagne Stakes. The Kilbrojiey filly is sore, otherwise she would lie favourite, and with Good Hope carrying a 101l>. penalty Wardancer, who is to liave Oliver's services, may be in most demand. In tho Hurdles, Bore may be most liked. R. M'Seveney, who is to ride the Calibre gelding, is very confident he will finish in front of Moddite, as in a schooling ga'llop at Riccarton before leaving home he never let the I!oyal Artillery gelding get on terms with' him. Bore is slightly affected in the wind, but with a clear day this is not likely to stop l'im. A. telegram received from Dunedin last night slates that the weather was fine, and the going would be perfect for today's races.
