AFTER-THE-WAR TRADE
DISCUSSED BY COMMERCIAL MEN* ; By Telegraph—Press Association—Conyrisld London, February 14, The Manchester Chamber of Commerce to-day discussed after-the-war trade. Its policy is based on three regulations. The first adheres to free trade; the second favours a tariff against Austrian and German goods; and the third suggests an Allied and Imperial Conference to draw up agreement to carry on a commercial blockade of Austria and Germany for a definite period; (Rec. February 15, 10.5 p.m.) London, February 14. The conference rejected a motion, in favour of adherence to Free Trade. The Associated Chambers of Commerce of the United Kingdom have arranged a meeting on February 29 to ! consider post-par problems. The Norwich Chamber proposes a Department of Commerce and Industry, apart from the Board_ of Trade, "and ftiso urges a commercial alliance, with the Entente Powers against enemy, countries. ' ' The Glasgow Chamber suggests that the Government should ascertain the Dominions' viojvs on after-war trade problems, especially in regard to re- ■ o.iprocal _ trading, the regulation of trade with enemy countries, and tha ' coutrol of businesses in the Empire managed and owned by enemy subjects. ; A Birmingham resolution an inquiry on , the desirability of sub- i sidising and otherwise protecting indus- ; tries begun since the war, and manu- , 1 facturing articles formerly made by, ' enemy countries. Sheffield urges Government encourage* ment of the development of industries necessary to the _ national safety, with 1 particular attention to scientific re- \ search and commercial education. Edinburgh favours a discriminating Customs tariff to prevent'! Walsall advocates the prohibition of imports from enemy countries for five years. !
