At last night's Borough Council meeting the following motion, in reply to the Recruiting Board, was carried (not unanimously): "That this council is still of opinion that the Government should bring compulsory service into force in this Dominion, and for that reason declines to have anything to do with the proposed recruiting scheme, so that national servico may the sooner come to be the law of the country." The Borough Council last evening decided to form a Recruiting' Committee, and the Mayor was-requested to call a public meeting, at which M.P.'s and chairmen of local bodies will be asked to attend and deliver addresses. At a meeting of tho Borough Council a motion by the Mayor, approving tho action of the Government in supporting the voluntary principle, was defeated, and subsequently a_ motion was carried with one dissentient, favouring the new recruiting scheme and requesting the Recruiting Committee to call a meeting to consider the matter. It is stated that Pahiatua has regularly supplied its full quotas, and over forty 'men are waiting now to bo called. SUPPORT FROM PALMERSTON. Palmerston North, February 15. 'At a meeting of the Palmerston North Borough Council it was decided to support the new recruiting scheme. It was also decided to call a public meeting of representatives of public bodies to discuss tho scheme and set up a committee to go into the matter. HEARTY SUPPORT IN NELSON. Nelson, February 15. At a mooting of the City Council and Recruiting Committco to-night it was decidcdly to co-operatc heartily in the now recruiting scheme. The _ meeting adopted a resolution favouring the immediate introduction of conscription.
