HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A,meeting of the Lower Hutt;,Bor-, : ough Council was held last evening, there being present, the Mayor (Mr. 1 H. Baldwin), and Councillors Hodgins, : Meldrum, Carver, Brasscl, Clendon, M'Dougall, Heron, Ball, and Hobbs. Before dealing with the business, the Mayor referred to the death of tho : late ex-Councillor Hayes, and it was .. decided, that a letter of condolence bo sent to the family. A communication was received from Mr. J. T. Hawthorn, in reference to ii further lease of the offices occupied by ■ the council, which the latter had requested should be renovated.- The owner offered £10 towards the cost, of this work, - but the council decided not to agree- to the suggestion. Permission' was given to the Hutt Fire Brigade to. erect a' temporary practice tower oil the Recreation Ground. The City Solicitor forwarded a cheque for, £30 on behalf of,;the Wellington City for repairs to the road through- the Hutt Park, and the Mayor and Councillor' Hodgins were appointed to sign' the deed of dedication in this respect. ■ ' After'so'me discussion it was resolved to call .tenders' for a five years' lease of a cottage on the Main Road. The Health Inspector notified two eases of scarlet fever. A reply to a request for particulars was received .'in connection with the National ■ Provident "Fund, and it was decided' to' hold the matter over pending further information. The Mayor stated that as the scheme was being considered on behalf of tho employees of tho council, it would be necessary l to place the matter before them, to see . if they were willing to do their part as well as the council.

The Pctone Council asked whether the Hutt Council would be prepared to negotiate with them, with a view of effecting sewerage drainage in Wakefield Street, in respect of houses within the Potone boundary. It was agreed to leave the matter in the hands of the Mayors and engineers of both boroiigh^. The engineer's report showed that the expenditure for the fortnight ended February sto have been: District Fund Account, £161 75.; Gas Account, £12 4s. 7d.; total, £173 lis. 7<l.
