RAILWAYMEN'S WAGES
DEMAND FOR AN INCREASE. (B.f ToleirraDli.-I'ri'v.i AssnclarinT ' Palmerston North, February 11. At a meeting of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, held at Palmerston North, the following resolution wis carried:—"This meeting is of opinion that, the time has arisen when His Executive Council be called upon to demand li. per day increase of pay for all railway men, as they find that owing to the large amount of exploitation which is being permitted by the Government is causing the cost of living to increase and the purchasing power of the sovereign to decrease considerably, and the railway men of this country cannot • exist on the present wage. Owing to the prosperity of the farming community at the present time, dne to the extraordinary prices of farming commodities, -we suggest that tho funds necessary to increase the railway men's wages he drawn from an increased tariff on farm produce. Further, that a definite answer be ashed for in two weeks' time, and, if unfavourable, a special meeting of the railway workers to be callr.d to consider more drastic measures of fighting for our existence."
