MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., was on the Bench in tlie Magistrate's Court on Saturday morning. Sydney Smith pleaded guilty to a charge of disorderly conduct while drunk. According to Inspector Hendry, who appeared for tlio police, Smith was advised by a constable in Cuba Street to go liome, and a iricnd offered to help him on the journey. Both tlie advice and the offer of help were rejected by Smith, who challenged tlie constable to arrest liim. The challenge was accepted with the result that Smith was on Saturday fined 205., with the alternative of spending threo days in gaol. Persons convicted of insobriety were dealt with as follows: —William Whiteside, sentenced to two months' imprisonment; Thomas William Brown, fined 405., with tlie option of seven days' imprisonment; Kitty Andrews and Minnio Neilson, fined 20s. each or threo days' imprisonment; Gustav . Hirscliberg, fined' 10s. or 48 hours' imprisonment.
