In connection with the proposed changes in tho East Ooast services, reported on Saturday, it is understood that the Arahura, w!).ieh is to replace the Rosamond in the service, wil bo Eucccoded on tktt West Ooast m tho Mapourilia. Tho latter vessel has been out of commission for some time, and lyinit, idle in Wellington harbour. .As far as Gisborne is concerned, the advent of the Arahura is apparently being hailed \vith a consKerablo amount of satisfaction. ?peaki«ig to a representative of a local paper. Mr. J. W. »T. Preston, manager ot tho Gisborne branch «f the Union Coml>any, said: "Thi's initial development goes to show only too clearly tho absolute necessity for urgent and ample harbour deveiopment and wharfage accommodation inside. Mince the ftboi some Vireo months ago the Maui had been actively employed clearing and opening tho channel and removing tho silt from the i'nncr basin. He thought that with active effort on the part of tho board this work would bo sufdc-'icnny* far advanced before the dredtje left'for Auckland to enable the Arahura to work inside satisfactorily. With an up-to-date passenger tteamer runulng to ■a close time-table it was imperative that the utmost dispatch should be~ secured." It wn-s intended, added Mr. Preston, that the Arahura should come tci the wharf at Gisborne. thus obviating any tendering or lightering. ' THE WAIWERA.
