MAKARA COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. At the monthly meeting of the Makara County Council yesterday, Mr. 11. J. Monaghan presided, and there were also present Councillors J. H. Haggertv, A. J. Taylor, J. A. Pile, S. Bryant, and G. Monk. On tho question of recruiting, a letter was received from tho Mayor _ enclosing a circular from tlio llecruiting Board. The chairman was appointed to represent tho council at tho recruiting meeting held yesterday, but tho council decided that, until the list of persons to be interviewed was received, no action could .be taken in tho county. In tlie discussion which took place councillors generally expressed themselves as in favour of compulsion. Plans and estimates of No. 2 bridge at Porirua ivore considered and approved. The clerk was instructed to proceed with the matter of raising the special loan of £1000 to make good the damage caused to roads and bridges by the heavy floods of last November. It was decidod to proceed against ratepayers, who were in arrears to the extent of £1 or more for old rates.
