Tho King and Queen gave an audience to Clutha Mackenzie, who was ac- , companied. by * his _ father (Sir' Thomas ; Mackenzie). Tho King' sympathised with. Clutha's bad luok, and spoke in warm-' est appreciation of the Now Zealanders' ; achievements. Sir Thomas Mackenzie mentioned a letter ho had received from the Rev. Mr. Featherstone, of Ingleivood; relating that a widow had four sons killed , and three yet went to AYell- ; ington to bid God-speed to lier eighth son when lie was loaving for the' front. The King instructed Sir Thomas Mac- -. kenzie to convey his admiration of the widow's patriotism and , self-sacrifice, courageous resignation with which die had borne her heavy loss, and the willingness with which she had given her eighth and last child at the country's call.
