A French soldier, Elie Eonsseau, lias twice deserted from file army since the beginning of tlio war in order to get nearer to the frpnt. He absconded from a Territorial regiment, enlisted in the Foreign Lemon, and was_ promoted sergeant for gallantry in action, and when his regiment was sent behind the lines to rest, lie deserted again.
