SUPERANNUATION
FOR THE MERCANTILE MARINE. Superannuation schemes in various forms are becoming the uivilised world's provision against indigence in old age. The latest movement 111 that direction is being taken by the Merchant Service Guild of New Zeabnd, who propose to organise such a scheme .in respect to its members. Captain F. A. Macindoe, secretary of the guild, has returned to Wellington from Auckland, where he attended the quarterly meeting of the members of tlie Auckland branch of the guild, at which the proposed universal superannuation scheme was discussed in favourable terms. There was a record attendance of members. Captain Macindoe is making inquiries 011 the subject of ttiperanmuitinn funds, and a special meeting of the guild will probably be called at the end of this month to "consider the, proposal. The scheme will differ from one that was brought forward a few years ago and rejected, as it will be organised by the guild and not by any individual shipping company, so that the benefits will be participated in by all the members of that body, numbering about 500, instead of being confined solely to the employees of one shipping company. It is anticipated that the'emplo.vers will bo asked to assist in the establishment of the fund if the membors decide to cany out the plan. A proposal has been brought forward that the Institute sf Marine Engineers be invited to assist in the formation of one big joint scheme which, owing to the augmented numbers, would be of advantage to the members of both bodies. When the actual figures with regard to membership, and ages of members, etc., are compiled and have been dealt with by an actuary the merits of the scheme can bo competently judged.
