NOTES AND COMMENTS
IB'jf 'jLE.S'COI.I The Taranaki Jockey Club's meeting will be concluded to-day when the second Taranaki States, six furlongs, will be decided. Tho Poverty Bay Turf Club's meeting will open to-day. A. final reminder is given owners and trainers with horses engaged at the Woodville District Jockey Club's meeting on February 16 and 17, that acceptances close to-night. Nominations for the Dannevirke Racing Club's autumn meeting close on Saturday night. Owners who intend doing the Nelson trip next month should note that entries close on Monday night at 9 o'clock. _ Thero is every prospect of the Jackson Stakes being a good race this year. Sir Geo. Clifford has Flying Start engaged. Tho Toff will represent the Yaldhurst stable, Emperador, Nones, and Bimetor have been left in bv Mr. Greenwood, and Hyttus, Tete-a-tete,"and Kilboy will complete a strong field. The running of Wardancer was one of the disappointments of the Middle Park Plate on Saturday. On track form he seemed certain to beat Good Hope, but he was never prominent. The pair may meet again iu the Dunedin Champagne Stakes, in which Good Hope will have a 101b. penalty. This will give Wardancer a decided pull, while he will also be well served by the higher scale of weights, which will enable the services of a stronger horseman to bo secured. Sylvan Dale, the full-sister to Volume, 6till continues to disappoint her connections. Yesterday she started favourite, but failed to make any return for the money invested on her. Last year tlie Taranaki mare was successful on one occasion only out of a dozen starts. Her full-sister Avon Park is, on the contrary, most consistent, and regularly wins. Last week she was a hot favourite in the concluding event at Egmont, but a bad passage prevented her from .winning. Yesterday she came out and scored from a strong field in the Flying Hand nap at New Plymouth. Avon Park is a six-year-old mare, and Sylvan Dale is a year younger. Some of those present at Ricearton on Saturday say that Bee nwKtd down soro in her preliminary prior-I no start of the Midsummer Handicap, but in the race the soft going enabled her to throw it off. Negotiations are proceeding for the purchase of the Mystification mare Whisperer, and if a sale is effected tlie Palmerston North mare will go iulo a Dunedin stable, It does not take a very good ono to win at some of the smaller meetings in Otago, and'this is probably where the would-be buyer ,of Whisperer intends place her. Emperador was allowed to take his place in the Taranaki Cup Held, but he was beaten into second place by the Auckland mare Self, who scored her first win of the season. Self is owned by the EUerslie trainer, E. J. Rao. The Wanganui-owned Lady Middleton was a good favourite for the Mimi Welter Handicap at Now Plymouth yesterday, but the best 6he could do was to finish second to the Australian-bred Thoolomi, who is owned by Mr. E. W. Alison. At Sandown Park (Vic.) on _ January 30 the ex-New Zealand horseman H. R. Cairns won the Hurdles on Pink Lady (St. Alwyne—Allinga), a member of E. A. Connolley's Caulfield team. Weights for tho principal events at the Wanganui meeting are due on Friday. Handicaps for the Wanganui Trotting Club's meeting will appear on February 14. A Sydney paper says—"lt is understood that Mr! E. J. Watt, being of opinion lie has too many brood mares and stallions, purposes 6onding some of both from Now 2icaland' to Sydney for the autumn sales. If All Black should bo ono of tho stallions he purposes offering, the 6on of Galliiilule should be in demand with the owners of Malster mares', in view of the success of his mating with Aurarhjg (Malster— Aurous), dam of Desert Gold and Egypt. It is more than probable, too, that Mr. Watt will dispose of Mountain Knight, who has madci a good recovery from the injury he received'when he fell in the Melbourne Cup, RACING FIXTURES.
