THE WHITE DEATH
The German journal, "Lokal Anzei£er" (December 28) tells of how a detachment of Austrian Alpine troops recently met their doom in an avalanche in Southern Tyrol. The troops were engaged in patrol duty, and only one out jot twelve could lie rescued alive. The Bole survivor lay buried under the snow for fourteen hours before being rescued nnmjured.' He had fallen nnder the iralanehe in such a manner that be svas left in a position v.-here he could still breathe. When tho rescue corps wcavated him from the snow at midbight his bo<ly was frozen stiff, but ho was still alive,' and ho was promptly •resuscitated. The soldiers who were Villed by the avalanche were all experienced ski-ers and mountaineers, fhe region in which they met their ate is a popular district for -winter pari*.
