Meteorological Office, Wellington, February 8, 1916. A well-known Wairarapa settler stated to an "Age" representative that in his opinion the Government should legislate to prevent the ruthless sale of ewe lambs that was at present being carried on, in'order to avert a shortage that appeared imminent in the near future. 'Owing to the harsh spring beiiig detrimental to the rearing of bees, the hives this year are (writes the Hamilton correspondent of the Auckland "Star") considerably smaller than the average, and the honey crops are suffering in consequence. Mr. William Perry, of Mastertori, secured 91 guineas for a stud RomneyMarsh ram sold at the Palmerston ram fair on Thursday. A Masterton settler of fifty years' standing stated that he had not exporionceu a soason in which so many fat sheep and lambs had been taken by the buyers as the pres'ent. Although having heavy crops, of an average of 10 tons to the acre, in some instances oven 15 to 18 tons, the onion-growers of Pukekohe (near Auckland) deplore the fact that the value of onions is the lowest that has ruled in January for a number of years past, rates being £3 10s. to £4 per ton, as compared with the usual price of £8 or £9 a ton.
