IBT <3DENCOB.T The Taranaki Jockey Club's meeting will be held, on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Tirana, who has hitherto figured as a, sprinter only, is to-morrow to 1h» tried over a distanco in the New Plymouth Cup, one mile and a quarter. At Hawera last Thursday ho was noticed running on at the finish of the Waimate Handicap, and this form probably influenced his owner's decision to run him in the Cup. He'is to be ridden by G. Clarke. The aged gelding Crown Pearl retains his pace in a wonderful manner, aud it will be no surprise to find him shortly getting his name on the winning list. At Hawera lost week he was placed third behind Zetes and Bertrada, but in the race he was unlucky enough to meet with interference. He will bo ridden by A. Oliver iu. the Plying Handicap at New Plymouth. , Merry Hoe has been paid up for in both the Cup and the Flying Handicap at Neiy Plymouth, but it will not be surprising if the mare is allowed to stay in her box and contest the Seoond Taranaki Stakes on Thursday. Emperador, . Bst. 131b., is in the Cup, but he has been an acceptor in races before this season, and has not seen the post. Scrutineer, who was operated on somo months ago for throat troubles, has boon in regular work for some weeks past, and is to appear in the Hack Hurdles at New Plymouth to-morrow. The field includes Vladian, a winner during the holidays, Collector, runner-up to Florist, and Simplo Sam, a useful sprinter. In Germany there is racing stablo attached to the Government stud, but in the case of horses bred at the British stud it is said to be more than likely they will be leased to private .owners during their racing careers. The test of the racecourso is necessary in the caso of all thoroughbreds. Reputation was taken out of the Australian Cup on tho appearance of the weights. He is to be reserved for tie big Eandwick meotjng at Easter. _ The Now Zealand-owned, but .Austra- j lian-bred, oolt Throo has been awarded 7st. 131b. in the Newmarket Handicap, . to be Tun at Flemington on Saturday, , March 4. Tlie craok Sydney horseman, W. H. M'Lachlau, is at present undergoing a tlwo-months' disqualification for impertinence to tho starter at Eandwick. This will make him miss the big Flemington meetulg next month. The well-known Anglo-Australian horseman, P. Bullock, who is at present in Melbourne, has received a cablegram 1o ' the effect that racing will be resumed again this year. Ho will therefore return to England after the V.R.C. Autumn Meeting. He was second on tho list of winning jockeys in England last season. During the "Tasmanian Fortnight" C. O'Neill won the Tamar Hurdles ut the Mowbray meeting, ou Polly lea, who | started favourite. ' nushman is now one of the most dis- ■ cussed horses racing, and it is claimed for him that he will rank high ill tho winning list next season. Critics stato that i«.- oompares favourably with the best • horses tilio Tairanaki district lias pro-' 1 duced. Tho son of Husbandman is engaged in three races on the opening day of tho Taranaki meeting, so evidently his owner is undecided what class to "start him in. t }'. Deeley lias been having a lot of trouble with the arm lie hurt at l.'akn:l puna, and at both the Egniont and Ptic--2 carton meetings he had to cease riding ; before his contracts were fulfilled. He ; i s under medical aUcnUoii, and a, 5»«il 'vhnay be awssatj.
