— Q - J POLICE ACTION' IN AUCKLAND. ] Br Telesrrapb.—Press Association. j Auckland, February 7. < The validity of the by-law rccoiltly made operative in Auckland, and iii- ' tended to aim at "one woman brothels," was upheld by Mr. Fraser, S.M., towhen a woman was charged, with keeping a house of ill-fame. The Magistrate 1 stated lie was satisfied tho by-law could be validly and legallj'; made under Section 344 a of the Public Health Act to "conserve ; public health and convenience." He • was quite' satisfied ,that these places were a menace to publio health. As to Section 347, that prohibited by-laws : on. matters dealing only "with matters of religion'and morals," and that was got over by the fact that the by-law was for the conserving of public health and convenience. Costrt for, appeal were fixed. Sub-Inspector M'llveney intimated that now that the by-law had been tested and declared valid, the police intonded to rise 'every effort to root out the houses of ill-fame in the city.
